I think it had to do with him being a Jehova's witness.

Seeing as "YOU" on the card he gave out pretty much indicated that he was in the clear.

Thats kinda the thought train of a Jehova's witness.

I'm also lead to believe that in Purgatory he realized that all he looked foward to was not as amazing as he thought.
